Position Description Volunteers are assigned tasks, which vary, depending on the needs of the client, their caregivers, and the volunteer's own particular skills and interests.

Volunteers provide companionship, supportive emotional care and compassionate assistance; offer basic comfort measures and practical assistance which may include duties such as helping a client to the washroom, providing assistance with nourishment, provide foot or back rub, etc; and emotional break to family caregivers from their care giving duties. Volunteers may be available at times when the client might otherwise be alone.

Volunteers give the degree of personal care that has been assessed as appropriate both for client and volunteer. Specific training may be required re safe walking, transfers, back care, etc.

Volunteers are not expected to function in a nursing care role, provide extensive physical care such as tub bathing, offer ongoing child care, or to do heavy housework.

Volunteers may also provide transportation to palliative clients who meet the qualifying criteria to provide that service.
Goal of Position A volunteer gives freely of their time and skills to support and further the mission and values of VON. A palliative care volunteer provides to clients/caregivers emotional support, practical assistance within the bounds of their role as a volunteer and respite help as they face a life threatening illness, death, and bereavement. Respite is the period of time when the stress and responsibility of caregiving is temporarily transferred to trained providers so that one may enjoy that time with peace of mind.
Position Qualifications A pre-requisite minimum of 30 hours of palliative training prior to or before completion of orientation is required.

Valid driver’s license with appropriate insurance coverage, and safe driving history for volunteers driving as part of their duties.

Demonstrated capacity to seek direction and feedback from program staff, and exhibit calm, sensitive qualities, particularly in changing situations of stress and/or uncertainty

Past health care training or experience with chronic and/or life-threatening illness would be preferred.

Knowledge of others who have received VON care/service would be an asset.

a) Fulfill time commitment as agreed
b) Arrange schedule of volunteer activities with VON staff member
c) Contact coordinator as soon as possible if unable to make a scheduled assignment and/or if unable to reach assigned client
d) Work within parameters of the position description
e) Provide services as requested and mutually agreed with VON staff member.
f) Work toward fulfillment of program/department goals
g) Communicate concerns, comments or suggestions to the coordinator and/or primary nurse on an ongoing basis, preferably at each service visit, on the subject of client’s condition/situation
h) Submit reports and keep accurate records as applicable.
i) Participate in on-going review of service delivery processes and evaluation
j) Adhere to VON Canada policies
